“The Deep” by Brecht Evens is a landscape-format composition that fills a black background with sea creatures of widely varied shapes and colors. Jellyfish, fish, squid and hanging seaweed spread across the entire surface, while at the bottom shapes resembling corals and underwater plants cluster together.
The creatures overlap without leaving empty areas: bodies with stripes, zigzags or spots, tentacles, fins and filaments crossing in every direction. Each creature has its own design, and the eye finds new details as it travels across the image.
Greens, yellows, pinks, blues, oranges and reds stand out against the black background. Transparencies and overlaps of color add depth to a scene that evokes the movement of the deep sea.
This illustration is part of the graphic universe developed by Belgian artist Brecht Evens for his graphic novels. His best-known publications include The Wrong Place, The Making Of, Panther, The City of Belgium and The Jellyfish King.
