“Saloon McAbe” by Manuel Marsol depicts the interior of a Wild West saloon, with a wooden-beam ceiling and reddish walls. On the bar, a white-haired man lies slumped with a yellow cloth in his hand.
On the wall hang a sign with the name “Mc Abe’s”, another reading “Do not spit on tables”, a painting of a bison, another of a reclining figure and a cracked mirror with red stains. There are also shelves with bottles and a cash register. On the left, the glass door shows, with the lettering reversed, the name of the place and a mountain landscape outside.
The browns, reds and oranges of the interior contrast with the greens and blues seen through the door. The detailed line and the accumulation of objects turn the scene into a small story full of clues.
Manuel Marsol (Madrid, 1984) has become, in just a few years, an international reference in illustrated books.
