“Moby Dick and Ahab Wall” by Manuel Marsol shows a turquoise plank wall covered with small framed pictures, objects and keepsakes dedicated to Moby Dick. There are painted whales, a ship, a drawing of harpoons, a lighthouse, a figure on a rock and a window opening onto the sea.

In front, a round table holds a copy of Moby Dick by Herman Melville, illustrated by Rockwell Kent, a Nantucket Inquirer newspaper and a mug with the message “I ♥ MD”. A clock and a wooden chair also appear.

The layering of papers, woods and textures gives the image a collage feel. The turquoise of the wall unifies the composition and lets the golden frames and the whites of the whales stand out.

Manuel Marsol (Madrid, 1984) has become, in just a few years, an international reference in illustrated books.
