“Fleurs Insectes” (Flowers Insects) by Brecht Evens fills the entire surface with a garden of geometric flowers, mushrooms, leaves and buds on a dark background that makes every color stand out. The plants are stacked in rows and layers, leaving hardly any empty space, and shapes resembling butterflies and other insects can be made out among them.
Each element has its own design: pointed petals, bell-shaped calyxes, mushroom caps, serrated leaves with dot and stripe patterns. The repetitions and variations create a continuous rhythm that invites the eye to travel across the image little by little.
The palette brings together pinks, violets, turquoises, greens, oranges and yellows with touches of red. Overlaps and transparencies of color create depth in a scene with almost no horizon.
This illustration is part of the graphic universe developed by Belgian artist Brecht Evens for his graphic novels. His best-known publications include The Wrong Place, The Making Of, Panther, The City of Belgium and The Jellyfish King.
