“Duelo” (Duel) by Manuel Marsol presents a cowboy seen from behind, with a black hat and a red neckerchief, about to draw. His torso is a blue sky dotted with white clouds that, at waist level, blends into a landscape of orange mesas.
On one of the rocks, right in the middle of the body, a tiny figure on horseback can be made out. The cowboy wears a holster on his hip and a belt of bullets, his hands are open at his sides and the back of his head is covered in black and white stripes.
The blue of the sky, the orange of the desert and the black of the clothing dominate the composition. The nearly flat planes of color and the visible brushstrokes give the scene the feel of an old Wild West bill.
Manuel Marsol (Madrid, 1984) has become, in just a few years, an international reference in illustrated books.
