“Beesten” (Beasts) by Brecht Evens depicts a dense, dark forest dominated by reds and blues, where trunks, branches and leaves intertwine in a tangle of strokes. In the center, among the trees, a small cabin shows its lit windows and a beam of light falling on the grass.
Numerous animals appear among the foliage: a reddish owl, birds with green, yellow and blue plumage, and, low down, a silhouette with pointed ears in a clearing. In the lower left corner, a figure with green eyes and a red mouth peers out between the trunks.
The composition layers color and strokes of different textures in reds, magentas, greens, blues and blacks. The warm light of the cabin contrasts with the darkness around it and guides the eye through the thicket.
This illustration is part of the graphic universe developed by Belgian artist Brecht Evens for his graphic novels. His best-known publications include The Wrong Place, The Making Of, Panther, The City of Belgium and The Jellyfish King.
