“Ahab” by Manuel Marsol, in landscape format, shows from above a great white whale diving into a dark sea, its yellow tail rising toward the horizon. At the far left, a small wooden boat stands out against a strip of pinkish-orange sky.
Small blue and turquoise fish swim around the animal, along with orange shrimp and, at the bottom, an octopus, while thin wavy lines mark the surface of the water.
The white of the whale stands out against the almost black blue-green of the sea, and the orange of the sky provides the only warm tone. The textures of the animal's body contrast with the patches and strokes of the background.
The title alludes to Captain Ahab from Moby Dick, Herman Melville's novel. Manuel Marsol (Madrid, 1984) has become, in just a few years, an international reference in illustrated books.
