“Rue Foule” (Crowded Street) by Brecht Evens fills the image with a crowd of faces and figures moving down a street at night. In the upper left, neon signs with letters and geometric shapes light up the scene against a black background.
The characters, with stylized faces, overlap in rows with hardly any space between them. Hats, hoods, glasses, earrings and different hairstyles give each figure its own look, and the greens, pinks, blues, yellows and reds change from one head to the next.
The contrast between the neon signs and the mass of color of the crowd creates a continuous rhythm. Transparencies and overlapping planes turn the street into a mosaic of faces.
This illustration is part of the graphic universe developed by Belgian artist Brecht Evens for his graphic novels. His best-known publications include The Wrong Place, The Making Of, Panther, The City of Belgium and The Jellyfish King.
