“Panter Invitation” (Panther Invitation) by Brecht Evens brings together a crowd of characters in feline masks, packed into a room of angular shapes. The faces, with spots, stripes and dots, take up almost the entire image and mingle with figures in colorful suits and dresses.
At the bottom, black silhouettes of cats and characters in shadow stand out, while at the top a frame with more figures in the background can be made out. The density of faces and the overlapping of planes make the eye travel across the scene with no single starting point.
Deep blues, magentas, pinks and violets, with touches of green and yellow, stand out against a dark background. Transparencies and geometric shapes give the composition an intense rhythm and the atmosphere of a packed room.
This illustration is part of the graphic universe developed by Belgian artist Brecht Evens for his graphic novels. His best-known publications include The Wrong Place, The Making Of, Panther, The City of Belgium and The Jellyfish King.
